Day Care Parents..surprising figures.
13 July at 21:37 from atlas
Recently we researched a cross section of day care parents to ascertain if they would know what to do if an emergency occurred at home with their children, or with another adult.
We surveyed over 250 parents, both mothers and fathers, and less than 2% said they would know what to do in a life threatening situation. About 10% said they would probably know how to do something, but might be reluctant to attempt anything for fear of making a situation worse.
This particularly applied to performing CPR, either on children or babies, or even adults.
This seems to be a trend throughout the country, based on feedback from other First Aid Training providers that we are in regular contact with.
If that is the case amongst many day care parents, imagine what the figures are like with the general public.
Efficient CPR is paramount in all cases of cardiac arrest if there is to be any chance of survival.
Any attempt at CPR is better than no attempt at all, and the latest CPR guidelines make it even easier for people with no experience to ascertain when to perform CPR.
Gone are the days of feeling for a pulse, (which actually wasted time), and fiddling about measuring where hands go on patients chest.
Undertaking CPR on a victim is now based on the unconscious patient's response, (or lack of it).
Once people have attended a CPR and first aid course they go away more confident, knowing they are able to save a life without any apprehension that they may do something wrong.
We ensure that any apprehension is removed, anyone can do it, and attainment is competency based, which means that nobody can "fail".
